IMANI Dance, formerly known as GESTURES Dance Ensemble, continues the legacy of training exceptional teen dancers across five generations. This pre-professional dance ensemble is designed for students ages 13 to 17 who wish to advance their training in a rigorous yet nurturing environment. Dancers engage in ballet, modern, and jazz classes, as well as acting for dancers and body conditioning.
In addition to these classes, dancers work with professional choreographers and master instructors who push, challenge, and inspire them technically, creatively, and artistically. IMANI dancers exemplify the highest level of dedication and commitment to their craft, serving as role models for younger students in our program.
The company has had the privilege of working with renowned industry professionals, including Darrell Grand Moultrie, Amy Hall Garner, Abdur-Rahim Jackson, Olivia Bowman-Jackson, Jona Biddle, Natrea Blake, and Sheila Barker.
Last summer, they were invited to the Creative Arts Project to lead a workshop on the dance creative process, reflecting PPA’s mission to "build community through the performing arts." Past performance opportunities have included PPA's annual OnStage! Recital, ProVoice's 3rd Honors Award Dinner, the youth summit at St. Phillip's Church in Harlem, and the 'Do It For the Culture' Gospel Festival at CNR.
